Introduction to QED Industrial Control System

QED Simplifies Industrial Control

The QED Industrial Control System (ICS) delivers everything you need for automation and machine control. It integrates a QED computer with your choice of front-panel user interfaces while providing multidrop communications, convenient screw terminals for easy field wiring, and room for QED Analog and Digital I/O boards. The system is housed in a rugged industrial enclosure suitable for bench-top or panel-mount applications.

The heart of the Industrial Control System is the QED Board, complete with 160K of battery-backed RAM, real-time clock, serial links, and 60 I/O lines including A/D, D/A, counters, timers, and digital inputs and outputs. And with the flip of a switch, you can convert the onboard battery-backed RAM to emulated ROM, so you never have to burn a PROM during program development!

Inside the ICS is a backplane board that delivers a versatile set of features. It provides an on/off switch, power jacks, flexible jumper-configurable power routing and ample prototyping areas. Built-in phone jacks and standard 25 pin connectors facil itate simple implementation of RS485 and multidrop RS232 serial communications. The backplane board accommodates a QED Board and two I/O boards, and brings the field connections out to convenient screw terminals. You can plug in two QED Digital I/O Boar ds, or a Digital I/O Board and a QED Analog Conditioning Board to configure off-the-shelf interfaces for your real-world sensors and actuators.

Configure Your Own "Super-PLC"

The QED Industrial Control System provides a superior alternative to the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) that are frequently used in industrial control applications. PLCs are dedicated devices pre-programmed with an event control loop that is custo mized via "ladder-logic" programming.

The Industrial Control System costs less and delivers much more than traditional PLCs. When outfitted with your choice of QED Digital I/O and Analog Conditioning boards, the ICS directly controls dozens of isolated industrial inputs and outputs, and c onnects to a myriad of analog sensors and actuators. It also provides a simple interface to industry standard I/O modules made by Opto-22, Gordos, Greyhill, and others.

But the ICS does much more. You program the ICS in a modern high level language, avoiding the hassle of ladder-logic programming. Efficient pre-coded library functions support rapid response to external events without the overhead imposed by the PLC' s event loop. Built-in communications hardware and software make it easy to configure multi-drop distributed control systems. And the versatile user interface makes it easy to design menu-driven front panels that improve productivity and ease of use. T he result is a cost-effective and user-friendly "Super-PLC"!
